What is a giclée?

Giclée (prounounced 'ZHEE CLAY') or high end inkjet printing, uses numerous water based inks to capture a wide range of tones and colors on archival papers. This creates a more durable image: they last about 200 years (in ideal conditions), resistant to UV lighting and more environmental friendly compared to traditional printing methods.

In the last few decades, giclée prints have become the industry standard for museum quality art print reproductions and photographs.

How Are Giclées Made?

In french, giclée means 'to spray,' and that's exactly what the inkjet printers do. They spray the ink onto the archival paper using a special high quality inkjet printer.

Giclée Paper Types

Whether you’re looking for a heavyweight, textured finish or a super-smooth, gloss appearance, there's a variety of paper options for giclée prints. There are a few different types of paper: matte, satin or glossy. From there you can choose a brand that fits your specific needs or artwork such as Epson, Illford or Hahnemühle.

Open Edition and Limited Edition Giclée Prints

Open edition prints have an unlimited amount that is printed which makes them more affordable. Limited edition prints have a limited amount printed, are generally numbered and signed by the artist.

Why Limited Edition Giclées Are Special

As the edition runs out, the price of the prints increases in value. Since there are a limited amount of prints, numbered and signed but the artist, these types of prints are more exclusive and more valuable.

Are giclée prints considered original artwork?

If you are buying a giclee of a painting, then it's considered a reproduction. However, if you are buying a limited edition (specifically 1 of 1) photograph that is signed by the artist, then it is considered an original work. These works are just as bespoke and valuable as an original painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.
